Like said, “first impression is the last impression”, we do judge a person at a first meeting. Many businesses depend on the personality of the person representing the business. A person with a great smile can be an asset to the company. To have a beautiful and healthy smile is equally important as having a pleasing personality and attitude. We spend thousands to look good failing to give attention to ‘smiling good’.
Dentistry for many of us is limited to tooth pain only. A dental treatment for most of us is not a problem until it hurts. We know where to go when tooth aches, but we don’t feel it necessary to go to the dentist, if we have problems that do not hurt.
In recent years, different technologies have been developed in dentistry. Most of these are directed in solving problems with ugly looking tooth than tooth that hurts. Composite filling (commonly known as White filling), Veneer (thin shell of ceramic), Crown (ceramic that covers whole of the tooth visible in mouth) etc are a few of them.
Veneers are very popular these days for smile makeover and can produce an excellent result. As the word suggests, veneer is a thin shell of ceramic that is placed over the tooth surface to cover a defective tooth surface. It can be used to mask surface and structural defects in tooth.
Veneers are thin and can be bonded easily to the tooth surface. The treatment requires minimum three visits. In the first visit, your dentist will diagnose and analyze your teeth. During the second visit, tooth is prepared and impression of the prepared tooth (measurement of tooth) is taken. The measurement is then sent to the dental laboratory to fabricate the veneer. The ready veneer will come in about 3 days from laboratory which is then bonded to the tooth surface with the special bonding materials in your last visit.
Veneer is normally made from ceramic due to its similarity with the enamel of teeth. Both of them are translucent and allow the penetration of light. This particular characteristic makes both of them very lively. Thus ceramic veneers look very natural. Another advantage is that ceramic have high resistance to stains and are durable.
Although, crowns are also made up of porcelain (ceramic material), Veneer is preferred over the Crown in many cases. Primary reason for this being that Veneer requires only a minimal reduction in tooth structure (only on the front surface) where as a crown placement requires the tooth to be reduced in all direction. However, in some cases, veneers are not advised. Generally, a person with less enamel structure, unhealthy teeth, habit of clenching, night grinding are not advised for a veneer.
Types of problems that porcelain veneers fix:
- Teeth that are discolored – either because of root canal treatment;
- Stained teeth - stains from tetracycline or other drugs, excessive fluoride or other causes;
- Teeth that are worn down
Chipped or broken teeth.
Misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped teeth.
- Teeth with gaps between them (to close the space between these teeth).
A good smile goes a thousand miles. So, visit your dentist for a smile makeover if you have above problems. It can change your life by miles.
