Save your Knocked Out Tooth!

Many of you might have seen your children or your friendís tooth knocked out while playing, riding cycles or in a fight. Road accidents and sports are few of the common causes of dental damage. In situations like this, one is often puzzled. Very less parents know that these knocked out permanent teeth can be saved if simple things are thought of.

Obviously in the cases like this the first option would be to go to a dentist. However, in a hurry many forget to bring or even collect the fallen tooth. If permanent teeth are knocked out, there is a high chance that they will survive if they are immediately placed back in the tooth socket and given good dental care. Ideally, the tooth should be replaced into the socket at the accident site itself. Then the patient should be rushed to the dentist, who will then splint the tooth into place. For a successful re-implantation, the patient should be brought to the dentist within thirty minutes of the accident.

Tooth lies inside a socket and is held by the ligaments. Any kind of excessive force if directed to the tooth may cause serious injury to the tooth. If a tooth is completely knocked out, pick up the tooth by the crown or chewing portion. Try not to touch the root as the root surface has those ligament tissues which help to reattach the tooth with the socket after re-implantation. So they should not get destroyed. If the tooth is dirty, gently rinse it in a glass of water with little salt added to it or milk. Do not use soap or any other cleaning agent. If possible, place the tooth back into its socket with the correct facing side. Holding the tooth crown in its socket, go to the dentist immediately.

If you cannot put the tooth back in its socket, be sure to keep it moist. The less time the tooth spends drying out, the better is the chance for saving the tooth. You can put the tooth in milk or a glass of water with only a pinch of salt, or you can simply put it in your mouth between your gum and cheek or under your tongue so that the saliva helps to moist the tooth.

Bring your tooth to the dentist immediately. Your dentist will help you to stabilize the tooth by splinting it for certain period. If the tooth has been out for more than 30 minutes, your dentist might suggest you to do some extra dental procedure other than splinting.

These steps might help you save your knocked out teeth:

  • Hold the tooth by the crown not by the root.
  • If the tooth has debris on it, gently rinse the tooth in milk or normal saline solution (water mixed with salt). Rinse for a few seconds only.
  • Try to insert the tooth in its socket (place where tooth lies inside the bone) very carefully. Be sure to face or position it the correct way.
  • Hold the tooth in place by gently biting on a gauge or on a handkerchief
  • Go to the dentist immediately with the tooth in its socket.
  • If you can not put the tooth in socket, put the tooth in a glass of milk or water mixed with salt. If you donít find any you can hold the tooth in between your jaw and cheek and contact your dentist immediately.

Some Doníts

  • If the tooth gets mixed with dirt, do not clean the tooth with vigorous scrubbing or cleaning agents.
  • You should not try to put a milk tooth back in its socket if it comes out because it may damage the permanent tooth underneath the socket.
  • Never transport the tooth to the dentist in tissue or gauze.
